The University Of Canterbury (UC) New Zealand is offering scholarship opportunities to Interested applicants who are looking to acquire an Undergraduate degree program at the Institution.

This scholarship recognizes and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury. The scholarship is currently awarded with values of $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000. Up to twenty-five scholarships may be awarded.

Eligibility

  • Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students and may not be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, or holders of New Zealand residence class visas.
  • Applicants must be completing, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a university entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a UC undergraduate degree programme (see regulations for details).
  • Such students who are undertaking, or have completed, a programme at the UC International College are eligible to apply.
  • The scholarship may not be held by students who: (1) have already undertaken partial study in an undergraduate degree programme at a New Zealand tertiary institution; or (2) have applied for Transfer of Credit from a New Zealand tertiary institution to an undergraduate degree programme at UC.
  • Candidates must have applied for admission to the University by 15 August in the year prior to their intended first year of enrolment at the University.

Rules and Rugulation

This scholarship recognises and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury.

  1. A specified number of scholarships may be awarded annually, to values specified in Note 2, at the discretion of the selection committee.
  2. Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students and may not be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, or holders of New Zealand residence class visas.
  3. Applicants must be completing, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a university entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree programme.
  4. Such students who are undertaking, or have completed, a programme at the UC International College are eligible to apply.
  5. The scholarship may not be held by students who: (1) have already undertaken partial study in an undergraduate degree programme at a New Zealand tertiary institution; or (2) have applied for Transfer of Credit from a New Zealand tertiary institution to an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury.
  6. Candidates must have applied for admission to the University by 15 August in the year prior to their intended first year of enrolment at the University.
  7. The scholarship is tenable for up to one year.
  8. The scholarship must be taken up in the year following the year of application.
  9. The scholarship will be awarded by the Council of the University, on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising: (a)  the Vice-Chancellor (or nominee); (b)  the Director, Student Services and Communication (or nominee); and (c)  a member of the University staff
  10. In making its recommendations the committee will consider: quality of achievement in a programme of study defined in clause 3 (footnote 3); evidence of leadership potential; involvement in cultural, sport or community activities; and evidence of international experience, which may include travel, attendance at seminars, and other activities outside the applicant’s home country.
  11. Applications for the scholarship must be made on the appropriate form, which can be obtained from the Scholarships website,6 and must be received by the Scholarships Office, not later than 5pm on 15 August in the year prior to the year of enrolment, or, if this is not a business day, by 5pm on the next business day.
  12. If in any year there are fewer candidates of sufficient merit than there are scholarships available, fewer awards will be made.
  13. Unless otherwise specified in the offer letter, an offer of a scholarship will lapse if it is not accepted, in writing, within one calendar month of the date of the offer.
  14. The scholarship is co-tenable with any other award unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.
  15. The value of a scholarship will be credited directly to a recipient’s University fees account at the time of enrolment in an undergraduate degree programme.
  16. A condition of acceptance is that recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance of the award, and that they are willing to engage in University community activities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involved with University publicity as appropriate.
  17. In the event of a recipient’s withdrawal from full-time study in an undergraduate degree programme during the term of the scholarship, the scholarship will be withdrawn, and any paid funds may be recovered.
  18. Continuation of a scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.

History of the Awards:

The scholarship was established in 2012 by the University of Canterbury.
